Day at the Shambhala Mountain Center

Posted in Uncategorized at 2:19 am by jyates

Here are some photos I did at the Shambhala Mountain Center in Northern Colorado.  If you have not been there, I highly recommend a visit.  http://www.shambhalamountain.org  It is a beautiful and peaceful place.  The day of my visit, the wind was blowing fifty miles an hour and it was frigid which creates a challenge for photography.  The upside of the challenging weather was that there were no other visitors at the stupa that day and I was free to photograph without disturbing meditators.  Enjoy!

Beautiful Family . . .

Posted in Uncategorized at 7:51 pm by jyates

This photo was from my mega shoot day in which I had the opportunity to meet the most extraordinary families.  This family was particularly fun to photograph.   50mm fixed; f 5.6; 1/250; ISO 200.

Interesting set up . . .

I photographed a group of four adult siblings in November and had a lot of fun trying different set ups for the photos.  The four siblings were so unique in their personalities and style and yet very close knit.  I had fun with this photo although I had to shoot it with my 50mm fixed lens as I had sold my wider angled lens and had not yet received my new lens.  I really enjoyed the effect.  f/22; 1/125; ISO 800.

Full Sun . . .

This photo is one of many from an 8 hour/5 family photo shoot I did in November.  It was a marathon day that had me running (particularly after children) and was challenging as the sun was rather direct.  However, I ended up with some great shots that day despite the less than perfect lighting conditions.

Backdrops . . .

While hiking, I came upon this barn that provided a lovely backdrop for portraits.  I began grabbing everyone in the vacinity to have their photo taken in the shadows of this barn.

I shot all these photos with my fixed 50mm/1.4 lens at:  f/4.0; 1/250; ISO 200.

From Above . . .

I took these photos of these two young ladies while on a hike in Wyoming.  For the first photo, we came upon a barn under a canopy of trees which created a perfect lighting situation.  I soften the skin which is evident looking at the photo.  However, the rest of the softening was achieved through an aptly timed fogging up of my lens.

These girls were truly beautiful inside and out – I really enjoyed working with them.

F/4.0; 1/250; ISO 200; 50mm lens

This young lady loved horses and I was glad to get the opportunity to photograph her with some horses we came upon during the hike.  I made no alterations to this photo other than resizing for the web.  It was not perfect lighting – the sun was rather direct – but the photo still turned out well.  f/5.0; 1/1000; ISO 200; 50mm 1.4 fixed lens.

Fall Shoot

Posted in Uncategorized at 10:01 pm by jyates

I had the privilege of taking this family’s photo this fall at the very end of the fall foliage.  We had a spectacular photo shoot with a 6 month old baby that was incredibly easy to work with and so happy the entire shoot.  We shot for two hours and he was happy-go-lucky the whole time.

f/5.6; 1/250; ISO400 50mm lens

f/3.5; 1/400; ISO 400  50mm lens – I climbed a tree so that I could take the photo directly above the baby.  In the future, I will simply bring a ladder as it was a little tenuous climbing the tree with my camera but it all worked out in the end.  I am usually a purist when it comes to color and shy away from changing the tones of a photo.  However, I used a cold tone filter on this photo and I like the outcome.

I have been taking a lot of photos of families in motion, lately.  I really like the effect.  I took this photo at f/5/6; 1/250; ISO 400; 50mm lens.  I am a little surprise that I was able to get it in focus at the speed of 250.

Recent Work

I have been so busy with my photography that it has been hard to find time to update my blog.  Here is a couple of pictures from a recent photo shoot I did of two children.  This brother and sister pair where hysterical.  I am not sure I have ever been around siblings who have enjoyed each other’s company more.

f/5.6; 1/640; ISO 200; 50mm 1.4 lens

These two were a real comedy routine and so much fun to work with.  f/5.6; 1/125; ISO 200; 50mm 1.4 lens

Family Photos

Posted in Uncategorized at 11:01 am by jyates

These are some of the photos I shot of a family at the wedding this weekend.  The family portrait was shot with my 50mm fixed lens at: f4.0; 1/100; ISO 1600.  The ISO setting was an error – it was a hold over setting from the previous shoot but somehow I escaped having graininess in the photo.  The photo of the girl was shot at: f5.6; 1/320; ISO 100.  I loved the outcome of both photos.  I worked very hard on the lighting of these shoots and, consequently, I did almost no alteration to the photos other than minor sharpening for the web and slight skin smoothening in Lightroom.  Enjoy!
